Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev (1740-1810) once put God on trial before his
congregation in the middle of a service. The charges? If we are, in fact, God’s
chosen people, why are we constantly tormented and oppressed? After
Levi Yitzchak made his case, he immediately proceeded to say Kaddish.

of the prayer, praising God and praying for peace? The ambiguity is unsettling.
